Why Use Fiberglass Pipe Insulation

If you have heard about people using Fiberglass Pipe Insulation you may wonder why they do.  Saving energy costs has become a hot topic amongst home owners, especially in such tough economic times.  Everyone does what they can to save money where ever possible and your home is the first place you should look to cut costs.  Energy costs make up for most of our home's expenses.  Heating and cooling accounts for the highest portion of energy costs, with hot water being the next highest.  To decrease energy costs with heating and cooling typically you add more insulation.  So why wouldn't you want to insulate your pipes?

Using fiberglass pipe insulation around your hot water pipes will help them to retain the heat and not lose it.  As hot water travels through a cold pipe, it will cool down, causing you to think you need more hot water.  You in turn keep the hot tap open trying to get more and more hot water.  This will cause your hot water heater to work harder, costing you more money and wasting more water.  If your pipes are insulated, the hot water stays warmer, in fact 2 - 4 degrees warmer than without it.  Often people will turn the thermostats down on their water heaters after they have insulated their pipes which again, reduces the overall cost of heating your water.

Insulating your pipes is very easy.  In fact the typical home owner can do it in less than a day.  You can buy fiberglass pipe insulation at your local home improvement store.  Owens Corning, a popular brand of fiberglass insulation has insulation made specifically for pipes of different diameters.  Typically it is moulded to fit right around a pipe snug and has a small slit to slide the pipe in.  Once it is on, you can seal the slit closed with tape.  You can find insulation for a variety of different temperature pipes in both commercial and residential applications.

There is no better reason why you shouldn't install fiberglass pipe insulation on your water pipes.  Energy loss through your hot water pipes can be great, so insulate your pipes as soon as possible to start saving your hard earned money.
