Choices For Basement Wall InsulationOne of the most common ways that people expand the square footage of their homes is by finishing their basements. You can add a work out room, family room, kids play room, a "man town" and much more in your basement. To finish off our basement, typically you will want to add walls. To keep the concrete walls as is will create a very cold, damp room. There are different ways you can create living space in your basement. The best way would to build studded walls like you would in any other area of your home then use insulation. There are many choices for Basement Wall Insulation. One choice of insulation for your basement could be the standard fiberglass insulation. Owens Corning is a major manufacturer of fiberglass insulation and you can purchase different qualities of their insulation at your local home improvement store. They recommend that use at a minimum their R-13 Fiberglas Insulation, however, you can go as high as their R-21. The higher the number the more insulating it is. Another option for basement wall insulation would be rigid foam board insulation. Owens Corning Foamular 150 and 250 is a great choice for rigid foam. Other companies like Dow also make rigid foam board insulation. Dow has many different lines including their Bluecor, Styrofoam and Styrospan. You could choose to go with expanding spray foam, which is a great insulator and will keep moisture out as well, however, it is the most costly choice and you need to hire someone to professionally install the spray foam. Both the fiberglass and foam board insulation can be installed by yourself which can save you money, but that will also depend on whether or not you have hired a contractor to your do your basement finishing project. There are also a few basement finishing systems on the market that can simplify your finishing project. Again, Owens Corning has a finishing system that can be installed in less than a few weeks either by a contractor or by yourself. Choosing the right basement wall insulation can help you to create the warm and comfortable living space that you have dreamed of. |
